The short answer
If you need a new visa stamp to return to the US, plan for delays. Since December 2025, expanded social media vetting has caused consulates in India to reschedule many H-1B, H-4 and student visa interviews, some by several months. A two-week trip can turn into a long stay abroad if your appointment moves.
What changed
The State Department expanded online-presence screening to H-1B and H-4 applicants, on top of F, M and J applicants. Applicants are told to set all social media profiles to public. Appointments in India were rescheduled in waves, with some pushed from early 2026 to as late as October 2026. Consulates warned that arriving on an old, cancelled date means you won't be let in.
Who should worry most
| Your situation | Risk level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Valid visa stamp, valid status, returning to same employer | Lower | You may not need a new interview |
| Visa stamp expired, H-1B approved | High | You need a consular interview to return |
| Changed from F-1 to H-1B inside the US | High | You've never had an H-1B stamp |
| On OPT and unemployed | High | Days abroad count as unemployment |
Pre-trip checklist
- Check your visa stamp's expiry date, not just your I-797 or EAD.
- Check real appointment availability at your consulate before you book flights.
- Review your social media profiles for accuracy against your resume and application.
- Talk to your employer and DSO first. Ask whether remote work from abroad is allowed if you get stuck.
- Carry the right documents: I-20 with a recent travel signature for F-1, EAD and job letter for OPT, or approval notice and recent pay stubs for H-1B.
- If you're on OPT without a job, remember that time outside the US counts toward your unemployment limit.
If your appointment gets moved
Don't show up on the old date. Check the new date, ask your employer whether an attorney can request an expedited appointment, and keep your DSO or HR informed. Expedite requests are discretionary, so don't count on one.
Frequently asked questions
Is international travel banned for F-1 or H-1B holders? No. The issue is appointment delays, not a travel ban.
Does the duration of status rule affect my travel? No. A court has postponed that rule, so F-1 travel rules are unchanged for now.
Can I stay in the US instead? If your status is valid, you can generally stay in the US with an expired stamp. You need a valid stamp only to re-enter.

Is the $100,000 H-1B Fee Still in Effect? The November 2026 Status
No. The $100,000 H-1B fee is not being collected as of November 2026. Courts have blocked it, and a second judge struck down the September 2026 version that tried to extend it. But there is a separate, newer proposal for a $103,265 fee, and that one would matter far more to international students.
